The Saunter is an annual walking / running event along footpaths and bridleways taking entrants into some of the quieter and lesser known parts of the Yorkshire Dales. It passes through some picturesque rural villages and hamlets, and over some of the lower fells around the small market town of Settle. It is organised by The Rotary Club of Settle with help from members of the local community.

There are three routes on offer, accommodating a wide range of abilities and all can be run or walked. Dogs are welcome provided they are kept on a lead.

  • 10k / 6.2 miles
  • A half marathon (21k / 13 miles)
  • And 37k / 23 miles

The route is flagged with tape and all routes are very runnable, SPORTident timings will be used. A comprehensive route description is available to all entrants and maps and GPS files can be downloaded from our website.

We welcome all-comers in the expectation that they have a reasonable level of fitness to complete their chosen route.

Under 13s are most welcome for the 2 shorter routes but we do have some safeguarding rules for them.

These are :

  • The 23 mile route is restricted to ages 13+
  • 16-17 year olds if unaccompanied must provide a parental/guardian consent form. Please download, print and complete the form and bring it with you to the event.
  • Juniors aged 15 or younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times

Children aged between 5 and 11 whose parents have entered the 10k Saunter, will be allowed to enter free of charge. They would need to enter as normal, and fill in all the necessary details. They would get a race/walk number and a dibber. Their results would appear on the official results list. Children must be supervised by their parents at all times and would need to be aware of the cutoff times at the checkpoints. If the cutoff time at Stackhouse is exceeded there will be an option to return to Victoria Hall along the Riverside (The Ribble Way) The children would also receive certificates on completion of the 10k route or if they turn back at Stackhouse. (a 6k route)

We are likely to be using staggered start times to avoid crowding on the longer routes. The longer courses will set off first,

  •  23 mile - 8.00 to 9am,
  • 13 mile - 9am to 10 am
  • and the 10k - 10am .
  • The earlier slots on each longer route will be reserved for the walkers.
  • Entry on the day allowed for the 10k registration at 10am

The cafe in the garden at the event centre  will be open all day serving snacks and drinks.

Each year the event raises money for charities with past events providing funds for Cancer Research, the Clapham Cave and Fell Rescue, the Alzheimer’s Society and to help rebuild a Primary School following the devastating earthquake in Nepal.
