Course:
One of the few ‘mountain course’ events in Yorkshire, which is in the AM category. The race leaves the gala field and follows the road through the village towards Bracken Bottom. Turn left over the river bridge after the church to gain the road passing the School. Leave this road at Bracken Bottom (GR 817723) to begin the climb up through limestone pastures.
On gaining the ridge, a very steep scramble breaks through the southern crags to the summit of Pen-y-Ghent (GR 838734). Cross over the wall and turn right (Marshall’s will direct you) and follow the 4 x 4 grassy track by the wall that leads to the finger post, this will be flagged (GR 837742). From the finger post, follow the flagged route that will take you towards Hull Pot (GR 825745) via Horton Moor. As you enter Hull Pot gate, there will be a checkpoint. From Hull Pot, head left to the gate at the top of Horton Scar Lane (Pennine Way). Head down Horton along Horton Scar Lane, carrying on down through the gates and past a building on the left. Follow the long bend to the right and keep right to pick up the lane back into Horton. At the lane end, go right and cross the road onto the footpath (Marshall’s will direct you), this will take you back via the Horton Car Park and footbridge, finally back to the playing fields and the finish, where there may be some cake.
The route is only flagged from the top of PYG to Hull Pot, Marshall’s will be placed around the course to support. There are two official check points, at the top of PYG and Hull Pot gate. Anyone with serious ambitions should be doing some homework in case the weather is poor.
