SilverBackTrails Goathland V (5) Trig Challenge Ultra for runners & walkers.

The event can be entered as a pair or a solo participant.

Starting and finishing from the Village Hall in the beautiful village of Goathland, in The North York Moors National Park.  It was the setting of the  fictional village of Aidensfield in the popular Police drama Heartbeat, which was filmed in and around Goathland for many years.

Runners or walkers will navigate themselves around a course of circa 37 miles visiting five listed structures otherwise known as Triangulation Pillars.  The route is one of your own choosing as long as public rights of way are used and the Triangulation Pillars are visited in the order given to you on the morning of the event The CP and pillar locations will be sent out to participants prior to the event so that some route planning can be done. One of the CP locations will not however be revealed until you are on the course at one of the checkpoints. This checkpoint, once you have plotted it and reached it will have a surprise for you and an item left there, which is to be brought back to the finish with you...

There will be a master map with a suggested route marked on it for you to view at registration on the morning of the event.

The navigational element of the event is not too difficult, all the CP locations are in prominent locations and should be easily identified. As the event is open to pairs it means that if you are not so experienced with the navigational side of things, you can enter as a team and get round the course together.

Be assured that any route that you choose will have a variety of terrain, stunning views, and plenty of hills.

Participants will need to be self-supported however there will be 3 CP locations providing some snacks and drinks.

Participants should be competent in using both map and compass, this is a challenge for the individuals taking part so there are no support crews, or support runners /walkers allowed. Pairs and solos must go to each CP and complete the full course. Runners and walkers will have 15 hours to complete the event.

Registration will take place at Goathland Village Hall from 7:30 am with a mass start at 8:30 am.

There are no parking facilities for those taking part at the village hall, please use the car parks in the village.

All finishers will receive a certificate, a memento and a cloth badge to remember their achievement by.

There will be a hot meal tea/ coffee provided at the end for all those taking part. This will include vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Participants must be over 18 on the day of the event unless participating as pair and accompanied by an adult.

The following kit must be carried:

  • Map covering the North Yorkshire Moors, OS or Harvey’s recommend.
  • Working compass, whistle,
  • Head-torch and spare torch or batteries.
  • Emergency Bivvy Bag.
  • Spare Hat and gloves.
  • Spare warm long-sleeved top/ fleece or similar
  • Waterproof jacket/bottoms with taped seams unless Paramo.
  • Battery pack and charging lead for mobile phone.
  • Charged mobile phone with the RD mobile phone number. It is recommended that you have OS Locate and What3words loaded onto your phone.
  • At least 500 ml of water/ sports drink.
  • At least 60 grams of food for emergencies.
  • Cup for drinks at CP locations.

This is the bare minimum that should be carried, the weather can still be a force to be reckoned with on the North York Moors in April.

All participants will sign to say they are carrying the correct kit. There may be spot checks along the way.

Walkers and runners will have 15 hrs to complete the challenge.

Participants should be aware that they may have to finish the challenge in the dark.

Entry cost is £60 per pair, or £30 for solos and is limited to a maximum of 80 participants.
