*SPUNCH* Charlesworth - The Alignment!
Can be done solo, in a pair, or as a team of 3 or more. Each participant needs to put in an individual entry EXCEPT Under 18s who go for free with a paying adult. Minimum age 14. Juniors aged 14-17 go for free but must run with a parent or guardian over 21. A waterproof map of the course is provided to ALL participants.

Tuesday Evening Spunch Event - 60/90/120 min hilly score course options using a rich network of public rights of way, concessionary paths and open access land. Navigating with an enlarged and enhanced extract of OS Explorer map. Parking, Registration, Loos, Start, Finish, Refreshments all at Glossop RUFC Club House, Hargate Hill Lane, Charlesworth, Glossop, SK13 5HG
Celebrating the alignment of true north, magnetic north and grid north! (see geographical interest note below!)
A proper mid-week Peak District experience just 12mins from the M67 and very handy for anywhere in or around Manchester, on or near the M60.
Come from central Manchester on the train via Dinting Station -25mins from Piccadilly then 2k walk, bike ride or cab ride away from the event centre. (Contact Andy who may be able to organise a pick up / drop off).
Run, jog or walk - suitable for fell runners, trail runners, park runners, adventure runners, orienteers, walkers, and newcomers alike. Great for families and friends to do together. Suitable for all ages 14+ and all abilities - lots of help available for newcomers. No dogs allowed on your run/walk at this one sorry.
Start anytime between 6:30pm & 7:30pm. Registration open from 6:00pm.
120 min course participants must start before 7:00pm.
2k to 22k, the choice is yours!
Visit as many checkpoints as you can in the time available, S-punching using the MapRun app on your smartphone, Garmin or Apple Watch.
The area extends south from the rugby club onto Coombes Edge, a much-loved hill for walkers and runners, hosting at least 3 fell races (Chisworth Carnival, Up the Nab and Herod Farm). On one side is a dramatic landslip, from the top of which you get lovely views of the sun setting over Manchester. With a good amount of open access land up top and detailed footpaths lower down it will have plenty of interest. Route choice will be all about how much hill to climb and making sure you do not go up and down too often, unless you love a hill rep, but once you're up on the top there's fast and flat grassy running along the edge.
Glossop Rugby Club are hosting us, providing ample car parking, meals, a bar, toilets and changing, and a sunny terrace to relax on after your run (or indoor space too if the weather is not kind).
Drinks: the usual bar selection plus 2 real ales (in May, it was Wainwright and Distant Hills Kerala)
Food: order at the bar BEFORE your run and let them know what time you'll be back and want to eat. The menu is:
Steak and potato pie or vegan pie & chips & baked beans £10.50; Chicken or Veg Curry & Rice & Naan £9.50; Cowboy pie (Meat, Veg or Vegan) £8.50

Celebrating the alignment of true north, magnetic north and grid north
Maps have a little diagram to tell you that true north, magnetic north and grid north are all slightly different. In theory you'd adjust your compass to account for this (but in practice it rarely matters). However, a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon is occurring... During 2024 magnetic north is shifting across England into alignment with true north. If you then stand on the special line of longitude that is the centre of the British National Grid it means true north, magnetic north and grid north are all aligned. Do not adjust your compasses - for one day only!
Where is this special line of longitude? It is 2 degrees west of the Greenwich meridian. This runs near Charlesworth and using the data in this blog https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/blog/magnetic-true-grid-north-align-over-great-britain we estimate the alignment will happen in our area during July 2024. So join us at Glossop Rugby Club in Charlesworth for a celebration of this amazing geographical phenomenon that only a MapGeek could appreciate!
