The Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay is a 43k relay race with 1,733m of ascent, run in 4 stages (1 runner per stage) starting and finishing in Comrie village. The race follows a route up and around the hills on either side of beautiful Glen Lednock. There are Legs to suit everyone: Legs 2 and 3 cover rough mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4, although challenging, are closer to trail races. Leg 1 is fully marked and leg 4 is partially marked. We will also be marking a small section of Leg 3 (across the featureless moor prior to CP6) to reduce risk of lost runners.
IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR LEG 1 AND LEG 4 RUNNERS
Owing to over-running work on the repair/replacement of Shaky Bridge (Grid Ref 774243), there will be no bridge to cross on race-day for leg 1 and leg 4 runners. Instead, we will be routing runners approx 30m upstream to a point where the river is shallower (usually, it's ankle/calf deep but we will be checking to ensure it hasn't changed dramatically by race-day). The stones underfoot are a bit slippery, so care will need to be taken and you will, of course, get wet feet! Marshals will be on hand to guide runners across the river at that point. On the other side, there's a rough path back to where the bridge was and a wee scramble up the bank to regain the normal route. The crossing is just a bit wider than the burn crossing we already have on Leg 4 (Grid ref 768257) but similar depth so Leg 4 runners will already have wet feet anyway!
*Vegetarian options will be available, but, unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate every allergy and dietary requirement. If you have any intolerances or allergens you may wish to bring your own post-race food.
Electronic Timing
This year, we are introducing electronic timing and checkpoint control using the SportIdent System. Teams will be issued with an electronic "dibber" at the start of this race which will be used by runners to check in at the checkpoints and at the end of their legs. The dibber is then handed on to the next runner as the baton. This will ensure precise times are available once your team has reached the finish line at Laggan Park and the dibber's data is downloaded. All dibbers should be returned at the end of the race. There will be a charge for all dibbers that are not returned.
Charity Fundraising
The race is dedicated to the memory of our friend and fellow Harrier Simon Wake who died aged 47 in October 2008 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. All proceeds from the race are donated to NHS Tayside Health Fund and ring-fenced to help the fight against this terrible disease. There will be a raffle on the day so please bring cash and you could win some great prizes. The raffle will be drawn after the post-race refreshments during the race prize giving.
Race Legs are:
Legs 2 and 3 cover rough mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4 are challenging trail routes.
Rules and Safety
Please make sure you read the Race Rules and Safety Guidance before entering. By entering the race you agree to the Race Rules and Safety Guidance, and will ensure that all runners in your team are also fully aware of them before the race. The safety and well-being of runners and marshals are top priorities.
All leg 2 and 3 runners must carry safety equipment including: map, compass, whistle, waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves. There will be kit checks on these legs. NB: In bad weather, this safety equipment may also be required on legs 1 and 4 too so please make sure all runners bring this kit along.
