The Dales Trail is a one day gravel bike or mtb ride on old drovers lanes, bridleways, moorland singletrack and country lanes in the Yorkshire Dales. There are 4 route options with all riders sharing the same core route between the start line in Settle and the 35km point where the routes branch off to cover different distances, terrain and type of tracks.

The Dales Trail can be enjoyed as a straightforward ride in a stunning landscape or as an 'adventure' with a 'Checkpoint Challenge' where riders locate 7 places on the first 35km of their route and work solo, in pairs or in teams to find answers to a series of questions about features in the landscape.

Riders will not be expected to name types of rocks, plants or animals. The Challenge is to observe and record on a 'brevet'; style card some aspect of the landscape that is there on the trail, eg, what is the date on the way stone at 35km?  The Checkpoint Challenge is entirely optional. The basic idea is to slow down and observe the landscape we ride through. Back at home riders can check their answers against the information updated on the Yorkshire Divide website.

The starting line is the 3 Peaks Cycle Cafe on Market Street in Settle and riders register from 7.30am - 9.30am.  Riders can enjoy a meat or veggie sausage bap and tea/coffee from the excellent cafe between 7.30am - 9.30am.  Note the cafe closes at 4pm and there will be no event officials at the finish line (we'll be out on the trail and heading to the campsite).

The four routes are:

  1.  Short - 60km + 1,060m

  2. Long (MTB) - 84km + 1400m (return via Skipton)

  3.  Long (Gravel bike) - 85km + 1,550m (return via Hetton)

  4.  Epic - 112km + 2,150m (retrun via Appletreewick)

Maps and route info are on the Yorkshire Divide website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk and feel free to ask any questions about the event to yorkshiredivide@gmail.com

The cost of entry to the 'Dales Trail' includes:

  • GPX file - Sent to your email address on the Monday prior to the event (30th September). Each rider will receive all four gpx files so they can choose nearer the day which route to ride.
  • Event Hub - Every adventure needs support and so 3 Peaks Cycles in Settle will be our hub where all riders sign on between 7.30am-9.30am. Once riders have registered with Event Officials they can depart on the Saturday.
  • Breakfast - In the 3 Peaks Cycles Cafe riders can enjoy a meat or veggie sausage bap and tea/coffee from 7.30am-9.30am
  • Toilet facilities  - they are located at 3 Peaks Cycles and at several sites along the route.  The GPX will pinpoint their location either in public facilities such as the info center behind Malham Tarn house or at cafes and pubs along the route.
  • Adventure - The event is not a race and as such we will NOT be recording riders times.
  • Prizes - Every rider who scores 7/7 on the Checkpoint Challenge will win entry to one Mills n Moors ride of their choice from the 4 rides in the upcoming Winter Series.  A rider must take a photograph of their card (with a time stamp) and submit the photo to the Event Organiser at yorkshiredivide@gmail.com prior to 5pm on the 5th October when the answers to the Checkpoint Challenge questions will be posted on the Yorkshire Divide Facebook and Instagram page.
  • Refunds full refunds issued up to Monday 2nd September 2024 but after that date no refunds are possible as we start to pay the many bills and the 'pot' is soon empty.  The option of transfer to the event in 2025 is available.

NB:  This is a self supported ride using the gpx to navigate the route. The routes are not signed posted / flagged, there are no manned feed stations because the route passes through Dales villages and the route crosses long sections of isolated moorland so riders should be able to fix basic mechanical faults and be able to judge their own fuel / hydration needs. There is no rescue vehicle!

The organisers do not provide insurance.  Being insured through either British Cycling or Cycling UK would help cover for bike loss or injury. Personal insurance is advisable but not mandatory.
