Overview
Under hyped and aimed solely at those with good mountain running and 'hill skills'... This is no tame trail race! You will be going over mountain summits, on mountain trails, so sound navigational and hill skills will be required.
Expect a tough mountain trail route including the summits of Helvellyn and High Street, on a variety of terrain but predominately Lakeland mountain paths. Total distance will be around 40 miles with several thousand feet of ascent . An early dawn start will set you up for a daylight completion … if you can!
Start Time
6.00am Distance - 40miles/c.2500+m
Entry
Only available to competent mountain runners and limited to 100 starters (Entry system will accept 110 to allow 10% DNS)
Accommodation
You can book floor space to stay in Askham Village Hall on Friday night - £10 per person.
Campervans / campercans also welcome on Friday - £10 overnight fee if staying overnight.
Accommodation option for 2025 is to base yourself at Patterdale, in the George Starkey Climbing Club Hut. This gives you the added bonus of a bunk bed, showers and self-catering kitchen, as well as a lounge and dining area. It is available both for Friday and Saturday nights.
The George Starkey Hut is serves as our indoor checkpoint (twice) during the event on Saturday, and is a great place to chill out on Saturday night and stay over for a rest day or warm down Sunday activity.
We have limited beds, just ten available, at a cost of £20 per night. Some of our event team members will be staying there too. There is a reasonable bus service to the George Starkey hut, which is right on the roadside in Patterdale. Hence, access to our event by public transport is further enhanced. If you need a lift from the hut to the Start at Askham we can sort that for you.
Route
Start / Finish – Askham Community Centre The route takes in the summit of High Street and Helvellyn. Checkpoints are: Loadpot, High Street, Angle Tarn, Patterdale, Grisedale Tarn, Helvellyn, Patterdale (again) Place Fell and Martindale. It's a figure of eight route with the 'short route' being 27miles. #SMJ
Kit
Full bad weather mountain running gear required! Details confirmed in 'Final Info' email during week before, once we know what sort of Winter / Spring snow and weather we have. It could be anything!
Kit wise, expect to carry the usual mountain running safety gear. Waterproofs, quality long sleeved thermal, spare fleece or primaloft. Warm hat and gloves (and spares?) Head torch, compass, map, food and drink, survival bag, whistle … etc.
Askham
Askham is a great venue being on the edge of the National Park, and just five miles from Penrith, and the M6. There are a good range of local accommodation options, and good rail connections via Penrith, and our new George Starkey Climbing Club Hut is a brilliant option.
