Join us for the second edition of the Solstice Sundowners, a unique cycling event that offers both long and short course options, designed for adventurous riders seeking a challenging experience. Both routes begin in Chepstow and end in the heart of Cardiff Bay, showcasing the beautiful and rugged landscapes of South Wales.

This is a semi-supported, mixed terrain cycling event with two routes to choose from. Riders are responsible for navigating the route using the provided GPX file, which requires a GPS device such as a Garmin, Wahoo, or a mobile phone with Komoot or a similar app.

The ride kicks off on a scenic gravel track along the Wye Valley Greenway, a former railway line offering a flat and picturesque start. Riders will pass through the thrilling Tidenham Tunnel before crossing the River Wye into Tintern, where the routes split.

The Long Course (105 miles, 1928m ascent): This route is more suited to Gravel Bikes and takes riders deeper into the Wye Valley towards Cleddon, featuring a rewarding tarmac climb up Beacon Hill. After some gravel sections and around 15 miles of tarmac, riders will reach the first of two feed stations. From here, the route enters the remote and exposed terrain of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), tackling old tramroads and rocky climbs before a singletrack descent to the second feed station at Dolygaer Parkwood Outdoors, near the beautiful Pontsticill Reservoir. The ride then joins the Taff Trail, following a gentle descent into Cardiff along scenic cycleways.

The Short Course (62 miles, 1320m ascent): This route is more suited to Mountain Bikes or Gravel Bikes with chunky tyres and splits at Tintern and leads riders up a challenging tarmac climb toward Chepstow Park Wood, where spectacular forestry gravel awaits. Quiet roads connect to the ancient Wentwood Forest, followed by scenic cycleways through Caerleon and around Newport’s outskirts. Riders will enjoy off-road sections and sweeping views over Cardiff and the Severn Estuary before rejoining the long course for a flat and easy finish.

Date and Time: The Solstice Sundowners will take place on Saturday, 14th June 2025, starting at 08:30am. Registration opens at 07:45am, and riders must complete the route by 22:00pm for an official time.

Location: The event starts at the Drill Hall, Chepstow, NP16 5HJ, and finishes at the Waterguard Pub, Cardiff Bay.

An event guide, including additional details about registration, start and finish locations, maps, route information, and instructions, will be sent approximately four weeks before the event. Please check your email for updates.
