LDWA South Downs Marathon - 28 or 18 miles in 10 hours

This year we will be offering two distances, crossing some of the most beautiful countryside in the South Downs National Park including Seven Sisters, Cuckmere Haven, and Firle Beacon, also visiting the iconic downland villages of Littlington, Firle and Alfriston. 4000+ft of ascent on the 28 mile route and 3000+ft on the 18 mile route. The 18 mile route will miss out Firle, Firle Beacon and return from Alfristion on an alternative route.

Start Location: East Dean Village Hall, BN20 0DR, just off A259, 3 miles west of Eastbourne. (OS Grid Reference TV557977). Bus route Eastbourne - Brighton 12, 12A & 12X

Registration: From 7:45 am. Car parking is in the field next to the Hall. Luggage may be left in the Hall.

Staggered start from 08:30 to 10:00 but fast walkers should not start before 09:00 and runners should not start before 09:30. All to be finished by 18:30

Results will be on the LDWA website shortly after the event.

Entry includes a certificate for all finishers and a light meal at the end. Three / Two CP's  with food and refreshments  A badge is available to purchase.

Route Description. Full route descriptions, section of map and GPX files will be made available from 4th May 2025 for download from our website, in both pdf and doc format.

THE RULES

  • The LDWA South Downs Marathon is open to walkers and runners who must be over 18 years of age on the day of the event.
  • Membership of the LDWA is not required.
  • No entries on the day.
  • Sorry, no dogs except assistance dogs.
  • The opening and closing times of the check points will be strictly adhered to.
  • To qualify for a certificate all entrants must finish within the 10 hour time limit and have been passed through all the check points in the correct order
  • Retirements must be made at a checkpoints. If a retiree is unable to reach a checkpoint they should call the emergency phone number provided on the Route Descriptions. The checkpoint marshals will have the right to retire any entrant who they consider is unfit to continue. Transport back to the start will be provided for retirees.
  • The weather on the South Downs can change quickly so dress accordingly.
  • All entrants should carry maps to cover the whole route (OS Landranger 198*/199 or Explorer 123/OL25). * As only a small part of Landranger 198 is required an OS Get-A-Map based copy of the required portion will be available with the route description. Please note – a paper route description MUST be carried by each entrant even if walking in a group or navigating by smart phone or GPS. If the route description is on an electronic device, sufficient batteries must be carried for 15 hours. Failure to carry a route description may mean that (a) you are not covered by the LDWA Public Liability Insurance and (b) that you could be disqualified.
  • All entrants must bring a drinking vessel.
  • On the day it will be possible to swap from the 28 mile route to the 18 mile route either at the start or CP1. No refund will be available nor will you be able to swap from the 18 mile route to the 28 mile route.
  • Refund policy - Entrants can withdraw from the event up to the closing date and will receive a full refund minus an admin fee. Entrants withdrawing after the closing date will not receive a refund.
