Coniston is a classic Lakeland fell race: steep and rough in places with some fantastic ridge running and an interesting final descent, depending on the line you pick.
All entrants must have fell-running experience and the ability to use a map & compass accurately.
ENTRY LIMIT is 300 runners.
THERE WILL BE NO ENTRIES ON THE DAY
PARKING will be at Coniston CE Primary School, LA21 8AL - W3W richly.curving.rewrites. There will be a charge of £5 per car and space is limited, so please car share where possible. Payment is cash only; please bring the exact amount if you can. The car park will open at 09:30. All parking proceeds will go to the school.
No parking anywhere else in the village please as this will jeopardise the future of the race.
REGISTRATION will be at the Coniston Institute, LA21 8DU - W3W nibbles.amending.tender - and will open at 10:00. The route from the car park will be marked. Registration will close at 11:45.
KIT CHECK for all runners will take place at registration prior to collecting numbers. All runners must carry the minimum FRA mandatory kit regardless of the weather. No kit, no race.
RACE NUMBERS must be clearly displayed on the front of your vest and not folded in any way, as per FRA rules - runners wearing their numbers incorrectly will not be allowed to start.
All CHECK POINTS must be visited in-turn. It is the runner's responsibility to ensure their number is visible to the checkpoint marshals.
RUNNING/WALKING POLES are not permitted.
NAVIGATION is by traditional map & compass only - as per FRA rules. The use of any GPS device is forbidden apart from in an emergency and the runner must then declare themselves non-competitive at the finish.
RACE BRIEF will take place at 1150 on the finish field.
The race starts on the Copper Mines Road - a 2 minute walk from race registration; checkpoints are on the summits of Wetherlam, Swirl How and the Old Man; with the finish in the field adjacent to Coniston Institute. None of the route is flagged; however, you will be directed off the Copper Mines Road and up Mouldry Bank soon after the start by a marshal.
CUT-OFFS: there will be a 90 minute cut-off at Swirl Hause - GR 27800075. This will be strictly enforced and may be reduced in the event of bad weather.
TEAS, COFFEES, AND CAKES will be provided at the Institute from 10:00 by Coniston CE Primary at a small cost; payment by cash or card. All proceeds will go to the school.
WATER will be available, but please bring your own cups
PRIZE GIVING will take place in the institute at 14:30. In addition to the regular category prizes there's a £100 Pete Bland Sports voucher for anybody who sets a new men's or women's record.
TEAM PRIZES: first three men and first three women to count.
RESULTS will be available on ukresults.net after the race.
NO REFUNDS are available for this event. Substitutions can be made until entries close at 0900 on Tuesday 29th April.
All PROCEEDS from race entries will be donated to the local community.
Coniston Fell Race is run under FRA rules for competition. Minimum kit requirements apply and will be strictly enforced. You should arrive at the race prepared to carry waterproof whole body cover, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, hat and gloves and emergency food.
