Mills n Moors Series

Join us as we connect the varied 'off-road' tracks and green lanes that radiate from Marsh Farm in Shepley out into the Upper Don Valley and onto Silkstone Beck.  This one day event on a circular route suitable is a big day out on your gravel bike / mtb / e-mtb as Spring approaches.

As with every Mills n Moors event there are three routes on offer:

 - 'blue' grade route at 54km / 775 meters of climbing

 - 'red' grade route at 90km / 1,200 meters of climbing and

 - 'black' grade route at 100km with a total elevation of 1,500 meters!

Maps of each route are on the website: https://yorkshiredivide.co.uk/mills-n-moors-series

Highlights include:

  1. Gravel track onto Gate Foot ridge with wide views across the Holme Valley

  2. Track across the head of Winscar Reservoir

  3. Pick up the Trans Pennine Trail at Dunsford Bridge where the River Don begins its long journey

  4. Fast flowing superb quality traffic free trail to Penistone

  5. Waggonway Trail north of Silkstone

  6. Pass the Husker Pit Disaster Memorial to the 26 children who drowned in 1838 when the pit flooded

  7. Onto Elsecar Canal towpath and the Heritage Centre

  8. The long route takes riders onto Plank Gate in Wharncliffe Woods

The Event Hub

  • The event hub is at Marsh Farm, a working arable farm in Shepley

  • The start line is from the barn and out onto Long Close Lane

  • Register in the wooden barn at the farm on Sunday between 8am - 10am (No 'on the day entries')

  • Any gravel bike / mountain bike / E-bike is welcome and would get you around the route

  • The start line is 10 minutes from Shepley train station

The routes

  • Each route starts by riding onto the gravel track above Gate Foot with wide views across the Holme Valley
  • It is a self-guided ride with no way markings saying ‘Mills n Moors route'
  • You will receive all three gpx route files in the week leading up to the event

  • Its your choice which route to ride as any type of bike is fine on each route - gravel bike, e-bike, mtb.

  • The ‘blue’, ‘red’ and ‘black’ refers to how strenuous the trail is by distance and elevation and not by how rough the tracks are.

  • Minimum age of 12 years old when accompanied by a parent / guardian

  • There is free all day parking at the farm / Map on the website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk

On the day

  • Enjoy a relaxed tea / coffee / biscuits / home made cakes inside the barn BEFORE your ride

  • Hot soup and bread rolls back at the barn AFTER your ride

  • Toilet facilities (portable loos) and bike wash at the farm
  • Head off when you're ready as there is no ‘mass start’

  • Plenty of space and a few chairs in the barn to relax in after your ride

  • Pick up your embroidered cloth badge (new colours for 2025)

  • A list of kit that you should carry is on the website: www.yorkshiredivide.co.uk
