Fancy testing your navigation skills and want to go off into the forest? Walk, jog or run, then this is for you! Come and join us for some fun.
This is traditional Orienteering event, including a special score course option, with orienteering kites and dibbers. There will also be a selection of the usual ‘line’ courses, which vary in length and navigational difficulty.
This event is suitable for newcomers.
Glorious location: Delamere Forest is Cheshire’s biggest woodlands, a fantastic venue! Based at the Visitor Centre in the forest, the area spreads across the forest from the A54 in the south to the new Forest Holidays cabins in the north (hot tubs in every cabin!). The terrain is mixed evergreen and deciduous forest, with courses planned to make the best use of the runnable areas. Patches of brambles and bracken will be mostly flattened in February. There is a significant path network providing plenty of route choice. This area is open to the public and there will be many people, dogs, cyclists and possibly horses present in the area.
Score Format: It’s called a ‘score’ event because your ‘result’ depends on how many checkpoints you visit (20 points for each checkpoint). You decide your own route and how long you wish to be out – 1 or 2 hours, however points are knocked off if you are late, keep an eye on time! Nevertheless, the real ‘result’ is FUN FOR ALL.
Courses | Optimum Length (time or km) |
Difficulty |
Score | 1 or 2 Hours | Easy – Hard, your choice |
White | 1.9k | Easiest |
Yellow | 2.5k | Easy |
Orange | 2.8k | Medium |
Light Green | 3.4k | Moderate |
Short Green | 3.0k | Harder |
Green | 4.2k | A bit Harder |
Blue | 5.8k | Much Harder |
Brown | 6.6k | Hardest of all |
The Score Map (provided): Navigate with a specially drawn orienteering map. It is printed on waterproof paper showing all the checkpoints. The open woods are shown in white, the thicker woods in green (the darker the more impenetrable!), open areas in yellow, the contours lines are in brown and the water in blue.
Line Course Maps: Courses will be pre-printed on waterproof paper. The map was updated in 2024 by Mike Smithard. Description sheets will be on map and available loose.
Where: Delamere Visitor Centre Car Park, Northwich CW8 2JD.
When: We open at 10:00 after Delamere Parkrun, and you can start at your convenience any time between 10:30 and 12:00 (Noon). If you are doing the 2-hour score course, you might want to start early as the kites are collected after 2pm, as it gets dark early at this time of the year.
Delamere Forest Café & Toilets: Be sure to check out Delamere Forest Cafe for a wide range of delicious food and drinks. Open Saturday 9-5pm. MENU.
Discounted Parking: We anticipate that Forestry England will provide us with a discounted rate for car parking and information will be provided in the final details.
One Entry per Map: The cost is per map whether participating as an individual or in a family group. We encourage you to enter early to help our map printing. There will be a few maps available for those who make a last-minute decision and turn up on the day, we know how it is sometimes!
Start & Finish: Both are a short distance from the car park. The Start is 600m, and the Finish is 500m.
