She Who Walks: Langthwaite & map skills

Longer Walk: 5.5 miles – 820ft of ascent
We will meet at the public car park in Lanthwaite. From there we will follow a low level route to Scar House before climbing over the moor to the Stang Road. A short road section will bring us to a shooting track which we will follow round to Slei Gill. Here we will turn and drop down into the Gill to return to Langthwaite along the Arkle Beck.
During this walk there will be some optional map skills. This is entirely optional and it's not meant to feel like a course! If you don't wish to take part and would rather just relax and enjoy the walk that is also fine!
At the start of the walk we will look at some of the common map symbols featured on our route and discuss what we're expecting to see. We will talk about orientating our map and locating our position on the map. Your own personal copy of Ordnance Survey Map OL30 and a map case will be useful to make the most of this.
After the walk we'll warm up in The Red Lion (optional).
Mandatory Kit:
- Walking boots/shoes and thick socks
- Full length trousers as some sections of the path could be overgrown. Jeans are not recommended.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Warm hat and gloves
- Spare top layer in your pack
- Snacks and drinks in an easy to find section of your bag. We recommend bringing at least 500ml of drinks with you per person.
- Fully charged mobile phone
- Any personal medication needed
- A comfortable back pack to carry your own kit. You may wish to consider putting things inside a plastic bag or other waterproof bag inside your back pack
- Money if you wish to join us at Two Dales
