Introduction to Orienteering
Do you enjoy the outdoors, adventure and exploration?
Do you like the idea of a sport with both a mental and physical challenge?
Do you already love running and want a new challenge?
If so then this course is for you. Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport suitable for all ages and fitness levels, both walkers and runners. The aim is to navigate between checkpoints or controls marked on a special orienteering map.
Chigwell & Epping Forest Orienteering Club (CHIG) are hosting a 6-week basic instruction course in NE London from 26th April through to 31st May 2025, taught by a British Orienteering qualified coach. This is an adult beginner’s course for ages 18+. No prior experience necessary. Each session last 90mins.
You’ll learn:
How to read an orienteering map and visualise the terrain ahead of you
How to use the compass to take you where you need to go and judge distances
Tactics for getting where you need to go quickly and accurately
How to get round your first orienteering course
How an orienteering event works and what it takes to race
The programme:
The course consists of 6 weekly 90 min sessions in local parks and forests, progressively building up your technical skills and culminating in a closed competitive course. Sessions are on a Saturday morning 11am-12:30pm.
26th April – Fairlop Waters Country Park: Introduction to Orienteering and Basic Map Skills
3rd May – Fairlop Waters Country Park: Compass Skills and Map Orientation
10th May – Hainault Forest: Navigational Techniques
17th May – Hainault Forest: Route Planning and Decision Making
24th May – Epping Forest: Advanced Map Interpretation skills
31st May – Epping Forest: Orienteering Competition
Cost? £30 for all six sessions. If you become a club member after the course, we’ll refund £10
