This practical, one-day navigation course will cover the essential skills needed to navigate confidently and safely in rural and remote areas. It’s perfect for anyone new to navigation or those looking to refresh their skills. The course is led by an experienced and qualified instructor who will guide you through the fundamentals, ensuring you feel confident using your map and compass by the end of the day.

Course Agenda
1. Welcome & Introductions

  • Meet your instructor and fellow participants.
  • Overview of the day and safety briefing

2.  Basic Map Reading Skills 

  • Understanding symbols, scales, and contours.
  • Using the map to identify features and plan a route.

3.  Compass Skills

  • Taking bearings and understanding direction.

4. Navigation in Practice

  • Putting theory into practice with a guided walk.
  • Navigating to checkpoints and adjusting to terrain.

5. Safety & Emergency Procedures

  • Using navigational aids in poor visibility.
  • What to do if you get lost.

6. Review & Course Conclusion

What You’ll Learn
By the end of the day, you will:

  • Understand how to read a map and recognize key symbols.
  • Use a compass to take bearings and find directions.
  • Navigate confidently using maps and compass skills.
  • Gain awareness of safety procedures for hiking in rural areas.


What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (waterproofs recommended).
  • A packed lunch and snacks.
  • A water bottle.
  • A map and compass (if you have your own; we can provide them if not).

Start time:  9am
The course takes place in the stunning Peak District National Park. Specific meeting details will be shared upon registration, along with parking information and any additional guidelines. Expect a mix of open moorland, scenic trails, and woodland areas as your learning environment!
