The clubs from the East of Scotland are looking forward to welcoming you to two days of orienteering on the extensive complex sand dunes of Barry Buddon. The area lies between Monifieth and Carnoustie, overlooking the Firth of Tay. We are very grateful to the MOD and Landmarc for permission to use the area which is home to their live firing training facility. Therefore, we are happy to announce that the red danger flags will be removed to be replaced by white and orange kites for the weekend and competitors will be suitably challenged on the Championship courses.
Barry Buddon is predominantly grass covered sand dunes of variable runability, with small areas of scrub, open woodland and a few marshy areas. Ridges of intricate contours are interspersed with areas with only sporadic contour detail. The area is intersected with several tarred access roads, grassy tracks, plus some fences and ditches; the strong path network in some areas make the area suitable for less technical and junior courses.
A few Army buildings are scattered over the area, and a key feature across the map are the multiple firing ranges and associated military paraphernalia. Several areas are cattle grazed to aid growth of some flora and fauna.
We believe competitors of all abilities will relish the chance to race in this unique and technically demanding landscape once more after a layoff of over 10 years.
