U13/U15/U17 counter race in the scottishathletics Junior Hill Running League 2025
scottishathletics Permitted Event
RACE DETAILS
There are three races which will take place. The schedule for the races is:
12.00pm: Combined Under 13 (born 2013/14) & Under 15 (born 2011/12) Race: 2.9km, 130m ascent/descent
12.20pm: Junior Fun Run focused on Under 11 runners (born after 2014), but open to all: Approx. 1km, 50m ascent/descent
12.40pm: Combined Under 17 (born 2009/10) & Under 20 (born 2006/07/08) Race: 5.1km, 400m ascent, 140m descent. Note – this race is ‘mainly uphill’ which reflects the Youth Cup profile.
The first two races start and finish at the Shepherd’s Cottage (Grid Ref 120374). The final race starts at the foot of the drive (above the bends – Grid Ref 112369) and finishes on Cat Cleuch Head (Grid Ref 127372)
The race maps for the longer races are at the back of this information sheet, and can be viewed online at:
The races will be marked and marshalled, and follow hill paths, apart from the initial (tarmac) run up the drive in the Under 17/20 race. The paths can get muddy in sections after rain so studded footwear is recommended. The route back down to registration from the finish of the Under 17/20 race is approx. 1km with 200m descent on hill paths, and will be marked.
TRAVEL/PARKING/REGISTRATION/FACILITIES
Unfortunately, Broughton is not easy to access by public transport (the nearest regular bus services pass through Biggar and Peebles) so please share transport as much as possible.
IMPORTANT – If travelling from/via the Edinburgh area, note the Penicuik 10k takes place at 11am and uses the A701/A6094, so the best way to travel to Broughton is via the A702 to either West Linton or Dolphinton, then cut across to the A701.
Parking will be on the verge of the drive above and below Broughton Place Farm (ML12 6HJ). Please park as directed by the parking marshals (from 10.15am).
NOTE - The hill walker’s car park at the Shepherd’s Cottage is no longer in use, so anyone recceing the course before the event should park in the village. The village hall car park provides the most convenient parking – you can access the drive via the path in the field behind the hall and there’s a gate into the field from the car park.
Registration for all races (from 10.30am) will be in a gazebo next to the Shepherd’s Cottage, a maximum of 1km from the parking.
IMPORTANT – The Shepherd’s Cottage is a private residence and is strictly out of bounds.
There will be at least one Portaloo near registration. There are also public toilets in Broughton village (handier for the Under 17/20 start), see the link below:
Broughton King George VI Park - Public toilets | Scottish Borders Council (scotborders.gov.uk)
The registration area is quite exposed if the weather is bad, so please bring appropriate clothing to keep warm/dry. There is a grassy area beyond the gate onto the hill where small tents/gazebos can be pitched. We won’t be providing water etc., so please bring plenty water/refreshments (especially if it’s a hot day!). Please leave the area tidy afterwards and take all rubbish home with you.
Race numbers will be provided but please bring your own pins.
SAFETY
The race is permitted by Scottishathletics and run under the UKA Rules for Fell/Hill Running. In Scotland, Scottishathletics permitted events follow the SHR safety rules and guidelines which can be viewed here:
All athletes in the Junior Races and Fun Run must bring waterproof long sleeve top and bottoms, hat and gloves, and must be prepared to carry them if the organizer specifies they must do so. IMPORTANT - Failure to comply with any minimum kit rule will result in disqualification.
Any athlete who retires from the race must report their retiral to the start/finish and/or registration teams.
We will have a first aid trained helper in attendance and a first aid kit. The nearest A&E departments are all approx. 50min drive away, at Edinburgh Infirmary, Wishaw General and St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
Under 17/20 Race – Please do not warm up on the main A701 road. We’d suggest using the field behind the village hall from which the drive (start) can be accessed via a walker’s gate.
INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CUP SELECTION RACE/JUNIOR LEAGUE
The Under 17/20 Race has been designated the 2025 International Youth Cup Selection Race. Only athletes born in 2008 and 2009 are eligible for selection. The event is also hosting counter races for the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 scottishathletics Junior Hill Running League (8 race series). For full details of the selection policy and Junior League, please see the scottishathletics International Handbook:
IMPORTANT LIVESTOCK NOTICE - It is the lambing season so all dogs MUST be kept on a lead.
The race takes place in a valley where sheep graze. Competitors and spectators MUST keep any dogs on the lead at all times. Also, please take similar precautions if recceing the course in advance of race day.
