Terrain
Healey Nab is a hill to the east of Chorley, rising to 208m with the lowest part of the competition area at about 130m. From the top there are good views east to Winter Hill and Anglezarke Moor and west over the Lancashire plain. Although only about 1km x 1km, the terrain is remarkably varied, with both deciduous and coniferous woods, heather-clad heath and open areas. There are some old quarries with cliffs which MUST NOT be crossed.
Map
1:5,000 5m contours, new in 2021 by John Embrey, based on LIDAR.
There is very little bramble, brashings are not bad, bracken will be dead and flattened, so the vertical green stripes have been used to indicate a small area with rough tussocks – best avoided.
The centre of the area has purpose-built mountain bike tracks, shown in a lighter shade of grey than normal paths. Courses have been planned to avoid these, but bikes and pedestrians may be encountered on any of the paths and tracks in the area.
Start & Finish
Close to one another, approx.. 750m walk from parking / assembly along a footpath through fields, with 55m of climb; not suitable for buggies.
Start call-up will be outside the wood, at the edge of the field. You will cross the style into the wood at -2 minutes.
Starts : 11:00 – 12:30 Courses close : 14:00
Equipment
This is a winter event. Whistles are compulsory. Cagoules may be mandatory, if wet / cold / windy. Spare clothing may be left at your own risk near the start. The clothing dump will not be tented, so bring a waterproof bag to leave your kit in.

One short leg on the Yellow course does not follow a line feature. The control at the end of this leg is visible from the control at the start of the leg.
The southern part of the main north-south path along the western slope of the hill has an intermittent single-strand barbed wire fence along both sides. Courses have been planned to encourage crossing where there are gaps, but please take care.
