Update 15th March
Hutton Roof Crags Fell Race remembering Darren Kay
Many will know of the very sad situation where Darren Kay is still missing after failing to return from a run on Madeira at the end of last year.
Darren has run many races and competed at the highest level on the fells. He regularly participated in the Hutton Roof Crags Fell Race, being the winner a number of times, most recently in 2022, when on the revised course he set a new record.
To mark Darren's connection with Hutton Roof and with the support of his partner Victoria and family, a new 'Darren Kay Trophy' will now be awarded for this and future year's overall winner. Details of the 36 previous race winners will be added to the trophy and we look forward to it being awarded for many years to come.
Event Description
This is the 37th running of our traditional fell race over 7 miles (11.2km) and 400 metres of ascent. The race starts at 2.15pm, you must have collected your number by 2.00pm.
The event follows the core principles of fell running such as self-sufficiency and self-navigation which are paramount (please note the use of GPS devices of any kind is strictly prohibited). Full details of all the runners requirements are included on the Fell Runners Association (FRA) web site. You must be aware of them.
Taking in the beautiful hills of Hutton Roof Crags and Farleton Knott, the run generally follows established paths but with only the beginning and end of the route marked. The scree on Farleton Knott continues to be out of bounds as a result of the ongoing erosion concerns from Natural England which we fully understand and support.
Navigation on Farleton Knott is again required to follow guidance and our license through the FRA. Details of the three checkpoints and an indication of the basic route are accessible from the Hutton Roof Village website and will be displayed at registration on race day. The indication is not designed for race navigation purposes and you should provide your own physical map and compass on the day to consider your route options.

The race is categorised as a 'B Medium' event under FRA rules and kit requirements can be made on the day by the organiser. It is your responsibility to be aware of the potential kit requirements as listed on the FRA web pages.
New for this year... A race time limit of 2 hours 10 minutes has been introduced . Appropriate checkpoint cut offs will be applied.
Records:
Generous prizes supported by Pete Bland Sports will be awarded for male and female open and vet categories through to Vet 80, including cups for first and second male and first lady.
We are delighted that our country fair and junior races will again be held this year and are of course baking our fantastic cakes and selling refreshments at the Village Hall. Junior categories of U9/U11, U13/U15, U17/U19 are £5 and on the day entry only (minimum age 6 years on the day). Junior Races start at 1.15pm and registration closes at 1pm.
Car parking, donations requested, will be on the field adjacent to the Village Hall and traffic can be busy around the country lanes and main routes with holiday traffic, so please aim to arrive in good time. The car park will open at 11am.
Best wishes and good luck!
