Novices & Beginners
When you enter, we'll give you a map with your course pre-marked, which is yours to keep.  If you don't have your own dibber (or SI Card) we can lend you one, free of charge, but there's a £30 replacement cost if this is lost.             We recommend that you enter the white, yellow or orange course, which you can do as an individual or in a pair/family group:

  • White is the easiest level of course, suitable for young beginners, often with a parent or carer for company. Controls are fairly close together, and usually at path junctions, or junctions of paths and streams or walls; the best route should be obvious, along paths, and require very few decisions.
  • Yellow is slightly longer and harder than White, and is often the first solo course that competitors do. Controls may be further apart, and are placed at junctions or obvious features; the best route should be relatively obvious, but not necessarily along paths.
  • Orange course is medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners – controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; you may have several choices of route – some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

Shadowing and Competitive Pairs entry options are available.  Shadowing is where a junior competitor takes part, with an adult following on for safety or confidence purposes.  This usually takes place on the White, Yellow or Orange courses.  You pay for one entry, and receive one dibber.  Only the junior competitor shows up in the results (e.g. Maggie McBabb + 1).  Competitive Pairs, on the other hand, sees both competitors make an entry.  Each gets a race map, but there is only one dibber.  Both will appear in the results (e.g. Shug McPhater and Effie McClumpha).
