We're delighted to be hosting Loch Ken's 6th end to end 10Km. This is the 14th year of our annual charity Wild Swimming Weekend and in addition to our other events, we are delighted to host this challenging 10Km swim between the Galloway Activity Centre and Crossmichael.
For those new to the area, Loch Ken is a narrow stretch of clean, open water well loved by wild swimmers. As part of the Hydro-Electric scheme, the Loch is regularly filled with fresh water from the Rhinns of Kells and is SEPA tested shortly before the swim. It's known to be some of the cleanest water in Scotland and is a beautiful location for wild swimming.
The event will be held at The Galloway Activity Centre which has parking and a café. There is a mix of on-site accommodation for those wishing to stay over, including a number of luxury off-grid pods with hot tubs for a well deserved soak after the race!
We are an AALA licensed, RYA Training Centre operating for over 30 years and will have instructional staff managing the on-water safety cover during the day. Safety cover will consist of a number of RIB's and a 1:1 ratio paddlers to swimmers. That's right, your own private paddler to carry your snacks and look after you for the duration! First aid points will be stationed along the Loch managed by staff from the local EFAR Scotland who know the Loch well and are specialists in event first aid provision and off-road access. There is a compulsory exit point and feeding station about half way.
The swim will start immediately after a safety briefing at 0900. Registration from 0830. When signing up for the event, you will be asked to give the time you expect to complete the swim in. We ask for you to be as accurate as possible with your timings and to advise us closer to the event if your expected time changes. There is usually either no current, or a very mild flow from North to South.
Past events have seen swimmers having an enjoyable swim at a range of paces. Although it has not been necessary in the past, depending on the participants and conditions, we reserve the right to split swimmers into groups with separate start times. In exceptional circumstances, swimmers may be asked to pull back or to exit into one of the safety boats if required by the safety team.
Entry fees include:
Wetsuits and tow-floats are compulsory and both can be hired from the centre (please book tow float hire in advance if needed, £5 per float). Short wetsuits and one piece shoulder-less or vest suits are allowed. You are welcome to leave any belongings in the support vehicle to have for when you finish. Please be aware that the water temperature will generally be anything between 11-15 degrees C.
You will receive a final confirmation email a few days before the event which will contain a confirmed schedule for the day, but we will aim to set off around 9am.
