'Skills on The Dodds' is a chance to really explore the route and skills needed to get from Threlkeld, up Clough Head and over The Dodds to Sticks Pass. It's partially a recce but also heavily skills laden and an ideal partner session to the Caldbeck to Threlkeld recce. Book both these and you should be well sorted for a successful LiAD.
The day is open to anyone, not just those entered into Lakes in A Day. It's a great #NAV4runners course and excellent day out. It's a recce with added bonuses: excellent tutors will teach you a skills and guide you, plus you'll tick off four Wainwrights in the session.
Starting from Threlkeld Community Centre, you'll follow and learn the event route under the A66 and around to Clough Head. The steep climb of Clough Head contrasts with the steady climb of Great Dodd and the potentially confusing easier ground over Stybarrow Dodd to Sticks Pass.
You'll descend Sticks Pass ( a key access or escape route at any time of year ) for well deserved tea and cake at The Lodge-in-the-Vale. Minibus transport back to Threlkeld (or Keswick, etc ) completes the schedule.
NAV4 have a long association with the event having hosted the recces for many years and provide the mountain safety cover during the event itself. We know the event inside out, taken part ourselves, and know what works and what mistakes people make. Our experience tells us that this section of Lakes in a Day is where people often start to suffer as they become exposed to the wilder terrain and confusing area of The Dodds.
Nailing this, and being comfortable on these high fells will really help your confidence generally, and set you up for a successful Lakes in a Day finish. The day will include lots of information about mountain running events generally, suitable clothing gear and shoe choices, what to eat and drink, navigation and route advice, event strategy and training methods.
Client / tutor ratio for this session is a maximum of 6:1, and always with a minimum of two tutors for quality learning.
Overall, it will be a very valuable and enjoyable training day.
