Due to parking difficulties the New Year Cracker will take place on the University of Lancaster Campus grounds and not on Arnside Knot. However, it will still be a great way to start the New Year!

We  will be taking you around the parkland and woodland of the wider campus, but there are a few around the outer buidings using paved paths.

This event is raising funds for the North West Junior Squad coaching trip to Norway in 2022.

Travel Directions

Parking is signed from the Junction of the A6 and the access road to the Lancaster House hotel here (nearest post code LA2 0PH) just to the south of the main Lancaster University access drive.

Turn off A6 as if going to the Lancaster House Hotel (not the main University entrance) then turn left after 100m.

We are parking on a large hard standing free car park. There is plenty of space so please spread out – you will not be parked.

Facilities

There will be a portaloo on the car park.

Sorry, dogs are not allowed on the Campus.

First Aid – a first aid kit will be available at download for people to self administer.

Courses

A choice of odds and events score for experienced orienteers and a simple score course for less experienced orienteers. All controls will be worth 10 points each with a penalty of 10 points per minute or part minute over 60 minutes.

For the simple score visit as many controls as you wish or can within the 60 minute time limit. For the odds and evens you will start on either odd or even numbered controls (your choice) and switch to the other type when youdecide to do so. Once changed over you can't change back.

Do not enter Out of Bounds areas shown in purple hashing. You are not permitted to enter the main built up campus area delineated in this way.

There is an area of woodland in the North of the map which is marked as Out of Bounds. This contains a fallen tree and you are not permitted to enter this area, although you will have no reason to do so.

You are not permitted to cross the main University drive where shown as Out of Bounds for safety reasons. Please exercise great care when crossing all roads.

Map: 1:5000

Contours: 2.5 m

Printed on waterproof paper. Fully updated by Chris Roberts 2015 with minor updates by David Rosen 2020.

X on the map and descriptions are used to represent benches and exercise equipment.

Controls (including the finish) are in beacon mode so they can be punched contactlessly if you have a SIAC.

The controls are largely in the woods and playing fields surrounding the University. There are some grassy (could be slippy) slopes so shoes with good rubber grips are suggested BUT NO DOBS please because of the paved areas.

In some of the woodland, the rhododendron is more extensive than appears on the map but that should not cause you problems.

Do not enter any buildings and please give any people you encounter a wide berth.

Start

This is adjacent to the car park.

Start times 12.00-13.00

When you enter please choose a vacant start slot from the list. We will aim to start people at short intervals to avoid queues, so please arrive at the start within your chosen start block.

If you need split starts to allow for child care we will set one of you off as early as we can (before 12.00) and make sure your partner can start when you are back.

Entrants on the simple score will get their maps at pre start, to allow newcomers to be given help and understand how it all works. Please do not show your map to anyone else.

We will try and give pairs and groups more than one map for maximum enjoyment.

There is NO entry on the day.

Only go to the start just prior to starting. Join the queue, keeping at least 2m apart and follow any instructions from the Start official.

Finish/Download

Finish is also adjacent to the car park. Please move away from it quickly.

Please proceed directly to download forming a queue if necessary keeping at least 2m apart. Use the sanitiser provided before you download and take the splits – these are pre cut and you do not need to touch the printer. Please move away from download quickly

Results will not be displayed on the day but will be uploaded to the SROC website at regular intervals during the event. To check the results using your own smart device simply scan the QR code printed on your splits printout.

Safety

Please bring a cagoule; if weather conditions are poor, cagoules may be compulsory.

There are roads on the campus (20 mph speed limit) which you will need to cross. We anticipate that there will be very little traffic but please exercise care. Parents of any competitors aged under 16 should consider whether their child should be accompanied.

Social Distancing and Other Covid Related Precautions

We will be following BOF’s current COVID guidelines but trust everyone will be using their common sense to ensure that all competitors and the public are as safe as possible. Please maintain social distancing and adhere to the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.
