Saturday 5th April 2025

Thank you for entering the Five Trigs this coming Saturday.

Please take the time to read this email as it gives important info about the event and you will feel much more prepared in the morning.

So, if you had not noticed, there are a couple of major changes from previous editions. The first is the new venue. We are now based at the Castleshaw Outdoor Centre, Waterworks Rd, Delph OL3 5LZ.

The second is that we have reversed the route which now means you will do the route in an anti clockwise direction, heading onto the tops towards Standedge. Remember this on race day!!

CAR PARKING

If only I could find a venue that had a massive carpark. But it's not to be and car parking will continue to be an issue. A quick look at the map will reveal not a lot of choice when it comes to parking. So, please carshare as much as possible or arrive on foot or bike if you can. Waterworks Rd is a narrow road so please ensure you part right into the sides. PLEASE DO NOT PARK AT THE OUTDOOR CENTRE OR THE SMALL PUBLIC CARPARK. Keep to the Waterworks Rd or the main A62 Huddersfield road (note this is a fast road so please take care if you park here)

REGISTRATION

Registration opens at 08:00. Here you will receive your race number and timing dibber. There will also be unlimited tea, coffee, cordial and toast as well.

You can leave a drop bag at the centre and labels will be available if you require them to identify your bag.

We will be using the SPORTident timing software so you will all be given a dibber to use whilst on the course. Please take care not to lose your dibber as a payment of £30 will have to be charged. They will be securely attached to a wristband by one of the marshals at registration. If you fall or stumble whilst out and about, check you still have your dibber attached.

Although we will not be doing a kit check at the start, there will be a random minimum kit check at the finish line. Please ensure you are carrying the following FRA approved kit.....

  • Full body waterproofs (Taped seams and a hood)
  • Map of the route, compass and whistle. Note that your map MUST BE PHYSICAL. Digital maps are not accepted. Compasses must also be the traditional physical type.
  • Hat and gloves
  • Emergency food
  • Optional cup/water bottle (no cups at the CP's)
  • Fully charged mobile phone.

If you have pre ordered a map, please collect before registration.

The start will be on the Waterworks road, above the public carpark and will be signposted from the event centre.

ROUTE DETAILS

Firstly, this is a route choice event (except for the start which i will come back to later). The route is your choice and it is not flagged in any way, apart from the start. You must visit the checkpoints and support points in the correct order and ALWAYS keep to a public right of way, permissive path, track or road. Please respect people's property if the path goes through their land.

Here are the checkpoint descriptions and grid references:

CP1 - Standedge Trig Point - SE 01242 10445

SP1 - A640 road crossing - SE 00233 12320 (Cut off for everyone at 11:30)

CP2 - White Hill Trig Point - SD 99061 13165

CP3 - Blackstone Edge Trig Point - SD 9722316365

SP2 - Lydgate (refreshments) - SD 95490 16457 (Cut off for everyone at 13:30)

SP3 - A640 road crossing - SD 96392 11169 (Cut off for everyone at 15:00)

CP4 - Tame Scout Trig Point - SD 96064 10531

CP5 - Bishops Park Trig Point - SD 96769 08037

CP6 - Lark Hill (track junction) - SD 99400 07483

Please ensure that you 'dib' into each control box at checkpoints and support points.

Control boxes will have an orienteering kite to make them more visible from afar

The start is a mandatory route which means that you have to follow it. It will be marshalled up to the top of Standedge Road where you can then choose your own route.

Please ensure that you close all gates as you go by , even if you can see someone behind you. Please be courteous to other path users and thank them if they step out of the way for you. A polite nod will be just as good if you cannot speak. And lastly, please do not drop litter. There have been fires on the moors in the last week or two, litter can contribute to causing fires so please, please take care with your litter.

THE GOLDEN RULE

If you have to retire due to injury, etc. please try to let the marshals know at a manned checkpoint. We will try and transport you back to the finish as soon as possible but please be patient and you may have to wait a long time. If you decide to cut the route short, please return to Castleshaw to notify us and to hand in your dibber. Do not just go home as we will have Oldham Mountain Rescue called out to look for you. The emergency number can be found on the back of your race number. Emergency number is 07876631490 if you wish to store it in your phone.

POST RACE REFRESHMENTS

When you finish, dib at the finish control box located near the gates to the outdoor centre (look for the orienteering flags). You will then need to go to the registration desk to download your times and to get a result.

Please remove muddy trainers before you go indoors (labels are available as people are good at taking home the wrong trainers!).

Showers are available if you need them so bring a towel in your dropbag.

There will be food and unlimited tea and coffee for when you finish.

PRESENTATION

There will be a prize presentation for the race competitors around 2pm, Prize categories are as followed.....

1st/2nd/3rd Male and Female

Normal Vet categories (in 5 year categories) for Male and Females

1st Team Prize for male and females (3 to count).

THE LOST SLEEP PHOTO RAFFLE

If you didn't know, we will be doing a raffle of Mel 'The Yorkshire Queen of The Spine Race' Sykes 'Last Sleep' photo in aid of raising funds for Oldham Mountain Rescue. Tickets are a fiver each (cash or card) and we will do the draw at the presentation.
